CHHOP Is Recipient of $5,000 Grant From Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union

May 14, 2020

Peekskill, NY — Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill (CHHOP) has just received a $5,000 grant from the Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union (MHVFCU). The money was used to buy food for Fred’s Pantry which provides healthy and nutritious groceries for those facing hunger.

The MHVFCU was looking for ways to support local food banks in the Hudson Valley that are on the frontlines of feeding communities in need during these unprecedented times. “In talking with community leaders in the City of Peekskill, it was evident that a donation to Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill would make a significant impact in helping to combat the increase of food insecurity among city residents,” says Mike Mattone, vice president, community impact, MHVFCU. “Once we were connected with Cynthia Knox and the CHHOP team and saw their commitment to serving the community, we knew that this was a great organization for us to work with.”

Fred’s Pantry has seen a huge escalation in individuals and families facing food insecurity since the Covid-19 pandemic first started to hit the area in March. Since that time clients coming to Fred’s Pantry for groceries each week has increased by more than 350%. With food banks strained to their limits, Fred’s Pantry must supplement its supplies with items purchased at retail and the $5,000 donation from MHVFCU has helped to make that possible.

“Demand has dramatically increased at Fred’s Pantry during the Covid-19 pandemic,” says Cynthia Knox, CHHOP, CEO. “Fred’s Pantry served 20,000 people during 2019. So far this year, we have already served 14,000 people. This generous $5,000 grant from Mid-Hudson Valley Federal Credit Union will help us to supplement the food supply each week so that we can continue to provide for those who are food insecure.”
