Army Vet Leaves for a New Beginning at Jan Peek House

The apartment was bare when Joe moved in, but was starting to fill with furnishings donated by veterans organizations: a dresser and night stand; living-room rug; kitche n table; and dishes.

For the U.S. Army veteran, the ground-floor space represented something great: the first place he could call home since 2017.

For nearly two years after his wife’s Croton-on-Hudson home was lost to foreclosure, Joe lived a rootless life in a series of shelters in Manhattan and Long Island. There he joined a crowd of other homeless veterans seeking scarce affordable housing in New York City.

His frustrating journey ended when someone suggested he go through Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill. One of the organizations five programs is “Health Care for Homeless Veterans (HCHV),” which offers residential, clinical and treatment services.

On December 1, a landlord handed Joe a key to a one-bedroom apartment in Peekskill. He became one of three veterans who recently left Jan Peek after finding permanent housing. Each was helped along by Digna Merchan, veterans case manager for CHHOP.

“I can call some place home,” Joe said just after he left Jan Peek. “I know this sounds trivial, but putting my name on the mailbox the other day was the most outstanding feeling I’ve had in years.”

More than 50 veterans receive services each year from HCHV, a collaboration with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Assistance is not limited to healthcare. The comprehensive program responds to a range of needs, including housing and employment.

Joe and his wife, who now leaves near him in Peekskill, lost their Croton home in October 2017 when she became disabled and fell behind on mortgage payments. He tried to take out a VA loan to pay off the arrears, but was told the amount they owed was too great.

Stays at a succession of temporary housing programs followed. So did Joe’s struggle to find a suitable apartment. He was forced to delay chemotherapy for bladder cancer because he did not have a safe, sanitary place to recuperate.

“The one place they sent me to in the Bronx, the building had bullet holes,” he said. “Another place they sent me to … the floors were coming up in the place. They were literally coming up. You would have gotten splinters walking around in your bare feet.”

Mike lost his apartment near the Yonkers waterfront in June after falling into arrears while helping his son and daughter-in-law, who were struggling financially and just had their first child.

Social Services approved funding to repay the back rent, but the apartment building’s new owner refused to accept the money, he said. The former Peekskill resident believes the owner wanted to weed out longtime residents in order to get higher rents from new tenants.

Jan Peek House was “the first place” Mike thought of. Like Joe, he now has a new one-bedroom apartment in Peekskill.

“There’s just no comparison to being able to put your own key in your own door,” he said. “There’s no better feeling.”

A U.S. Navy veteran, who did not want his name used, is also celebrating getting the key to a new life.

He entered Jan Peek House on Nov. 2 after a series of stressful events drove him to the VA hospital at Montrose. Two days before Christmas he was moving into a two-bedroom apartment, working at a new job and preparing for classes at Westchester Community College.

“It’s a new year; it’s a new job; it’s a new semester; it’s a new state of mind,” he said.

Harry Chapin Run Benefits Fred's Pantr y

The 40th annual Harry Chapin Memorial Run/Walk Against Hunger took place virtually this year between October 10 and October 18, 2020. The event benefits five Westchester County-based nonprofits including Fred’s Pantry x CHHOP.

Singer/songwriter Chapin was an active philanthropist who had a vision to end world hunger. He was a co-founder of World Hunger Year, now called WhyHunger, and Long Island Cares, now known as the Harry Chapin Food Bank. Before the event, the Harry Chapin Foundation hosted a live streamed Facebook discussion about how each of the groups works to alleviate hunger.

Challenging times call forth our most altruistic selves. We have seen that altruism displayed in abundance. Over the past few months CHHOP has been the recipient of many generous donations from individuals and foundations. Whether it is a $25 donation, or a $5,000 donation, people are doing what they can to help and we are very grateful for each of those donations.

We know that these are very unsettled times. Some feel the crushing weight of inequality more than others. With the Covid-19 virus running rampant, the lack of civil discourse in our society and the pain of entrenched structural racism, the world seems to be burning. It is heartening to see that so many people move beyond the pain and fear that they face and reach out to support CHHOP’s work and the needs of our clients. At CHHOP, we believe that every person is entitled to safe and affordable housing and healthy, nutritious food. Your donations make it possible for us to continue our five programs that assist some of the most vulnerable populations in our area:

• The Jan Peek House shelter, which is the only 24/7 shelter for adults who are experiencing homelessness in Northern Westchester.

• Our Fred's Pantry program serves 400-500 individuals a week impacting 1,700 to 2,000 household members. During the pandemic demand has increased over 400 percent.

• The Turning Point program provides long-term housing and supportive housing to chronically homeless individuals with a disability.

• CHHOP’s Healthcare for Homeless Veterans program provides shelter and support services to those who have served.

• RISE is a collaborative program providing housing assistance, case management, employment services and domestic violence support services to homeless families surviving domestic violence.

With time, the world around us will change. I truly believe that the arc of the moral universe bends towards justice and that each of us is called to pull it toward justice. We are the living embodiment of that bending arc when we support one another. And, when we support each other, we acknowledge the myriad ways in which we are all connected. And that, is what community looks like.

What Will We Choose?

The past few months have been a very strange and challenging time for all of us. We find ourselves often vacillating between despair and hope. Despair at our inability to ensure all are treated with justice and equity. And hope as we witness the beauty of human resilience from families who have overcome Covid-19 to protesters doused with tear gas tending to one another.

As I began to write this letter, the news that yet another Black man had been murdered by a police officer surfaced, this time in the parking lot of a Wendy’s fast-food restaurant in Atlanta. Again, we hear the anguished cries of “when will this end”?

We are at a pivotal moment in our country and the path we will choose to collectively follow remains unclear. Will we acknowledge that for all children to receive the quality education that is their birthright we must make fundamental and permanent changes in how we fund schools? Will we acknowledge the heavy legacy of enslavement, Black Codes and Jim Crow? Will we acknowledge the housing segregation and employment discrimination that Black Americans experience each and every day?

I believe that the past few weeks of peaceful protests, difficult conversations, and legislative efforts mirror what the majority of us are striving for: A more perfect America. An America where we can acknowledge our collective sins and wrongs and work toward justice and equity for everyone. Black Lives Matter.
